Youtube Autoplay Keeps Turning On
Youtube Autoplay Keeps Turning On; If the YouTube autoplay feature turns on automatically even after it’s turned off on your PC, Android phone, or iPhone, then you’re not alone. This is an issue that users have been complaining about since 2019, and even now in 2022, it persists.
I can easily think of many reasons why someone would want to permanently disable YouTube’s autoplay feature and that’s not even the point. The thing is, YouTube going against this after giving users the “option” to disable it is just ridiculous and can be quite annoying.
YouTube autoplay keeps turning on
In this guide, I’ll show you two things:
First I will explain why YouTube autoplay will continue even in 2022
Next, I’ll show you how to permanently disable YouTube autoplay.
Without further ado, let’s dive right in.
Why Youtube Autoplay Keeps Turning On
YouTube keeps turning autoplay back on due to a bug or glitch that reverts newly saved data on YouTube to the previous one. This data includes various settings, including your YouTube autoplay preference, appearance settings, language settings, etc.
For users aged 13-17 on YouTube, autoplay is turned off by default. But if you’re 18 or older, autoplay is turned on by default. But even as a user of 18 years or older, when you disable it, it will still show up.
Considering how long users have been complaining about this problem and yet no solution from YouTube, it’s easy to assume that Google is doing this on purpose for their own benefit.
This is the same thing that causes YouTube to constantly switch back to light mode even after switching to dark mode.
The good news, though, is that I’ve found some proven ways to prevent YouTube autoplay from triggering on its own.
So if you’ve been wondering, “How do I permanently disable autoplay on YouTube?”, then the next part is for you.
How to permanently disable autoplay on YouTube in 2022
To prevent YouTube autoplay from activating by itself, open YouTube in your web browser, click the lock icon next to the URL and click “Site Settings”, then “Clear Data” and finally the “Delete” button. Once removed, go to the watch screen of any video on YouTube and tap the Autoplay switch to turn it off.
Once this is done, YouTube autoplay will no longer be activated automatically.
Apart from this, there are other ways to fix the problem on your Windows, Mac, or mobile browsers and even YouTube app.
Let’s look at them one by one.
· Clear YouTube save data and turn off autoplay
If YouTube autoplay keeps on turning on, you can fix this by clearing the site data from the site settings tab in your browser. Once cleared, you have to go back to YouTube and disable autoplay the last time and it will shut itself off again.
As I see it, clearing saved data removes the previous setting when autoplay was enabled that was saved in the browser. That way, YouTube can’t fall back on this setting, as the only available (or saved) option is the new one with autoplay disabled.
To delete saved YouTube data in your browser, do the following:
With YouTube open in your browser tab, click the lock icon next to the URL in the URL bar, then click “Site Settings”
- Click Site Settings
- Click On ‘Clear Data’ And Confirm By Clicking The ‘Clear’ Button
- Clear Youtube Site Data
- After The Site Data Is Cleared, You Can Go Ahead And Disable The Autoplay Feature.
- Disable Autoplay
- Open Youtube And Play A Video
- On The Youtube Video Playback Screen, Tap The Autoplay Switch To Turn It Off.
- Disable Autoplay On Youtube In Browser
When you’re done, YouTube will automatically stop playing the next video.
How to stop YouTube from stopping automatically after a while
Personally, I have only experienced the problem in the Google Chrome web browser. However, if you also experience it in the YouTube app on your mobile phone (Android or iPhone), you can also clear the YouTube app data in your app settings.
This is how you do it:
- Open Settings and click Apps.
- Find YouTube in the list of apps installed on your device and select it.
- Select Storage and click “Clear data” and “Clear cache”.
- Open configuration
- Tap your name/device name
- Select iCloud
- Select ‘Manage Storage
- Find the YouTube app, and click on it.
- Click “Delete data” and then click “Delete” to confirm.
Once cleared, open the YouTube app on your Android or iPhone, go to the watch screen of any video on YouTube, and tap the autoplay switch at the top to turn it off.
Disable autoplay on youtube on the playback screen
If you can’t find the autoplay switch in the mobile app, go to Settings in the YouTube app > Autoplay and uncheck the ‘Autoplay next video option.
Disable youtube autoplay on mobile devices
That way, YouTube autoplay will be permanently disabled and the next video will stop playing automatically.
· Use a different browser
In my own experience, YouTube autoplay didn’t turn back on until I was streaming YouTube in the Google Chrome browser. However, when I used other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Opera, I did not experience the problem. Many users have also reported only similar experiences.
However, this is not a “final” solution. I’ve even seen other users report that YouTube autoplay kept coming back no matter what browser they were using. As I mentioned before, the problem itself comes from YouTube and is not exactly attributed to any particular browser.
Anyway, since some people (myself included) have not experienced the problem with some browsers, you should also try using another browser and see if the problem persists or not.
Use a different web browser
If you don’t experience the problem with another browser, then you know that you can always continue streaming YouTube in that particular browser. Still, the problem should be solved for you by clearing the data stored in the “faulty” browser as discussed in the method above.
· Use a browser extension
If you are still experiencing the issue of YouTube autoplay turning on by itself even when you enable it, you can use a browser extension to disable it permanently.
After trying several extensions on the Chrome web store, I finally found one that worked perfectly. You can also view user reviews of the extension.
install a browser extension to disable YouTube autoplay
After you add this extension to your browser, autoplay will be disabled and the icon will be disabled. That way, neither you nor YouTube can turn it back on while the extension feature is enabled.
· Update your browser
Another way to prevent YouTube autoplay from turning back on by itself is to make sure your browser is up to date, especially if the problem only occurs in one browser and not other browsers.
Check that you have the latest version of your browser in your browser, and if not, update the browser to the latest version from the Play Store or Apple Store. You can check if your Chrome browser is up to date by clicking the 3 vertical dots in the top right corner > Help > About Chrome.
